"Blue Monkey" draws inspiration from an 1833 engraving of a black saki monkey. It is a scientific documentary illustration from the time before photography. Zeiter retained the draped pose of the monkey, but removed the corncob in his hand, creating a more sophisticated expression. The surrounding natural elements are simplified, with monochrome coloration enhancing the abstraction.
